There are a thousand theories, which describe how to allegedly compose a “really good” story.
Basically, the literature experts differentiate precisely between the short story, the novella, the anecdote, the narrative and the novel.
A novella is, according to the dictionary, a tale dealing with a single unusual incident, which is told in a very straightforward way while continuously intensifying, without any unnecessary ramifications; the word itself stems from the Italian word novella and means “little news.”
You can honestly study the term novella for a full half year when you go to a university, no joke! Entire books have been written around this term, because the word novella changed its meaning many times in the course of centuries. Again and again it was re-defined, newly defined and complemented!
An anecdote is a little novella.
The narrative, as the dictionary defines it, is a story (or report or description) of real or dreamed up events, which is different from the novel in length - it is shorter - and from the novella in the fact that it is not so straight forwardly composed, and from the fairy tale in the area of reality.
Now, let us tell you a big secret: all those differentiations don’t really help you, the author! Not a tiny little bit! You have to be able to write a damned good story that is so suspenseful that the reader can’t stop reading. Only that is really important. That is truly the last criterion you will be judged by! All those questionable definitions are not of much use. The dictionary defines a short story as a story, similar to the novella, with lots of action and a special effect in the end. But doesn’t the novella have a special effect at the end also? You recognize in those definitions that the Misters literature-scientists, in most cases, are not writers themselves! They can’t tell a really good, suspenseful story! In addition, those definitions are contradictory particularly when you look at different dictionaries!
What you really have to know are the five components of a good story, so that you, even as a beginner, can immediately write a fantastically good story.
To keep it simple, we should differentiate between the anecdote as a very short, short story; the novella as the short story; and the novel as a longer narrative or a long story. The rest is poppycock. The definitions changed during the course of time, not to mention the difficulties when you try to define those terms in other languages!
But now, how do you compose an extremely good, very readable, really suspenseful exciting story? And how do you begin such a story? What are the indispensable parts of a good story…?
